Star Wars: It's All About Relatability
"You know, Luke always is like a couple of beats late in recognizing what’s right in front of him...For a guy that has the Force, he’s pretty clueless many times. And again, it goes back to relatability." - Mark Hamill

For his birthday, Mark Hamill had a long interview with starwars.com and answer some questions about his early career and filming the first three films. If you haven't read it check it out here!
Several times during the interview, Hamill mentions that Star Wars was meant to be relatable. "But it’s a pivotal scene when he gives me the lightsaber and says he wants me to do this, and I say, “No, I can’t, I’m going to get in trouble at home.” It’s relatable. Luke was nothing. He didn’t appear to be anything special".

So, how relatable is it?
Shakespeare was on to something when he said "some are born great. Some achieve greatness. And others have greatness thrust upon them". Hamill mentions that Luke was just a normal, nobody kid. He didn't sign up for this. Han just wanted to get paid. Instead he ended up joining a rebellion he wanted nothing to do with all because of an old man, a kid, and a pretty girl. He found his sense of loyalty.
The galaxy is full of different points of view and cultures, just like us. All those different views and cultures could come together for a cause, just like the rebellion and Jedi Order.
We see persistence pay off over and over, whether it's with lightsaber training, getting a bill passed in the senate, or finally convincing that girl to kiss you.
We learn lessons from this relatability. We see a little bit of ourselves in the story and realize how like those characters we are. Their trials relate to our own. We also see the never-ending idea of hope. Star Wars has the overarching theme of hope. There is always something to look forward to, something to strive for, a purpose. We, as fans, are continuing that awesome ideal.
So, what is Star Wars about?
Relating to the characters. Learning lessons. And always having hope.
